A schematic representation of the first sentence on the Narsaq stick

Summary[edit]

Description
English: This is a schematic representation of the first sentence of the Viking Age runic inscription on the Greenlandic Narsaq stick. The runes can be read as ą : sa : sa : sa : is : ąsa : sat.
Date
Source This abstraction is principally based on two sources. One is a drawing by Lisbeth M. Imer as published on page 294 in Nordby, K. Jonas (2018). Lønnruner. Kryptografi i runeinnskrifter fra vikingtid og middelalder. Oslo: Institutt for lingvistiske og nordiske studier. Det humanistiske fakultet. Universitetet i Oslo. Another is a schematic representation on page 68 in MacLeod, Mindy; Mees, Bernard (2006). Runic Amulets and Magic Objects. Boydell Press. ISBN 1843832054. This schematic uses that in Mees and Bernard has a base but is modified to confirm with Imer's drawing, in particular in these two ways: a) It follows the number of dots in Imer's drawing, b) It reflects the unusual s rune on the stick, which looks like the normal R rune. In Mees and Bernard the normal short-twig s rune is used. I created this schematic and I claim that it does not reach the threshold of originality for copyright but in case it does I release my contributions into the public domain. This is a representation of a medieval inscription which itself is in the public domain.
Author The author of the inscription is an unknown person in Greenland ca. 1000. This illustration was prepared by Haukur Þorgeirsson in the manner described above.

Public domain
The depicted text is ineligible for copyright and therefore in the public domain because it is not a “literary work” or other protected type in sense of the local copyright law. Facts, data, and unoriginal information which is common property without sufficiently creative authorship in a general typeface or basic handwriting, and simple geometric shapes are not protected by copyright. This tag does not generally apply to all images of texts. Particular countries can have different legal definition of the “literary work” as the subject of copyright and different courts' interpretation practices. Some countries protect almost every written work, while other countries protect distinctively artistic or scientific texts and databases only. Extent of creativeness, function and length of the text can be relevant. The copyright protection can be limited to the literary form – the included information itself can be excluded from protection.
