Summary[edit]

Description

On 28 December 1914 a young German man, Arthur Rottman, brutally murdered his employer Joseph McCann, his wife Lucy and their infant son John with an axe.

The McCanns had a dairy farm near Ruahine, and their bodies were discovered by the local cheesemaker, who went to find out why the milk had not been delivered.

Rottman had fled, but was soon found hiding in the bush near Cape Terawhiti and arrested. He was sentenced to death on 13 February 1915 and hanged the following month at the Terrace Gaol in Wellington. There was no clear motive for the murders.

Newspapers reported that on the scaffold, when asked if he had anything to say, Rottman remarked: “I know nothing of what I have done to these poor people. I am willing to pay the penalty of the crime; it does not appear to me like a horrible sentence, but a great relief. I will die happy, facing the great entrance into a better life, and may God forgive the man that caused my death and a great many more deaths. If this war had never taken place I would still be a free man. I say good-bye to you all, and God be with you till we meet again.”

The image above shows Rottman’s fingerprints, which are contained in a file created by the Criminal Registration Branch of the Police.
