Description
Español: Isla ubicada en el Océano Atlántico a 8,5 Km. de la costa, que es una superficie rocosa de 41 hectáreas habitada por la colonia más grande de lobos marinos de América del Sur. Su Faro fue construido en 1906 y a 59 metros sobre el nivel del mar es uno de los faros más altos del mundo. Es operado por el Servicio de Iluminación y Balizamiento de la Armada Nacional y emite un destello cada 5 segundos que se alcanza a ver a 40 Km. ayudando a efectuar una correcta navegación a miles de buques y embarcaciones que ingresan y salen del Río de la Plata. Desde su balcón exterior, el que se accede previa autorización a través de 240 escalones se observa una maravillosa vista panorámica de la Isla y la costa de Punta del Este. En julio del año 2001, se convirtió en el "primer faro no tripulado" de Uruguay, dotado con la tecnología del siglo XXI, el nuevo equipamiento se alimenta con energía solar a través de paneles que cargan un conjunto de baterías, ubicados en la misma construcción del faro.
