uld be used for building up the herd. Itseems to be a rule in breeding that the more mixedthe blood of the female the greater will be the in-fluence of the male. In selecting the females, careshould be taken to get those which have no tendencyto beefiness. By selecting foundation stock in thisway, and by rearing the best of the offspring, a val-uable herd for producing high-grade market milkmay be built up in a comparatively short time. PROTECT DAIRY COWS FROM FLIES The season of midsummer is one of the mosttrying times for the dairy farmer and then morethan at any time of the year is it necessary to usespecial care with the dairy herd. During the timeof harvest, when flies, heat and mosquitoes makelife a burden for the old cow, she also has to copewith dry, short pasture and a very busy keeper. Inot only sympathize with the old cow, but alsohave some feeling left for her keeper; for who canforget the milking during the fly season, whenthe temperature is very high and one is tired out

Certainly this is notan easy task, but the remedy we are anxious tohear, and I do not know as I can give a sure curefor this complaint. In many ways life can be madeeasier for both man and beast if a few things arecomplied with. In the first place, you should bear in mind thatcows freshening in the spring will have to be milkedduring the winter if they are to be made profitable, and if they are neglected during the fly season andtheir milk flow cut down, the chances are they willbe strippers the balance of the lactation period. Therefore, it is very important from an economicalstandpoint to use special care during the hot sum-mer months.
