Summary[edit]

Description
English: Combination image showing the same region of the sky (Centaurus and part of the Southern Cross at the bottom, Carina center right, part of Vela at the top) under different viewing conditions: From a lit-up hotel courtyard in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape province (population ca. 70,000) in the top image, and from Sutherland, a small city next to the South African national observatory SAAO in the other two images.

All three images were taken with the same camera and lens (Canon 450D and Tokina 11-16 mm lens at 11 mm; aperture 2.8 and ISO 1600 in both cases). The upper two images have an exposure time of 10 seconds, the lowest was exposed for 20 seconds.

The effects of light pollution are clearly visible comparing the upper two images - the sky is lit up dramatically, reducing contrast and making the dimmer stars almost disappear in the glow. In the lowest images, the better contrast is used to make the shimmering band of the Milky Way visible.

The uppermost image was taken on March 3, 2013, at 7:57 pm, the lower images both on March 20, 2013, shortly after 11 pm.
