Description

These evangelists are a very frequent sight at any place in Los Angeles and Orange County where there is any crowd. The occasion for this particular appearance is the Anaheim stop of U2's 360 Tour at Angel Stadium.

Despite California's liberal reputation, historically the state has been very conservative, and Orange County is the heart of that conservative spirit. It used to be a major base for the John Birch Society, it banned nonwhites when California had racial segregation (yes, California did have segregation - and even today, African-Americans are generally unwelcome in Orange County), and even today, with Christian theocracy having become a key plank of American conservatism, Orange County's theocratic organizations, including Traditional Values Coalition and Trinity Broadcasting, have become the pillars of conservatism, aided by influx of Korean and Central American immigrants who are overwhelmingly Christian and conservative.

Angel Stadium, home to Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, is a very receptive place for the theocrats; several evangelical revivals are held every year, including the big one, Harvest, every August hosted by Rev. Greg Laurie. There is a reason why my favorite Southern California baseball club is the Dodgers rather than the Angels.
