Summary[edit]

Description
English: Elder by the byway, Compton Down Elder is the only tree which rabbits find distasteful, elder thrives on rabbit warrens and any soil rich in nitrogen from the dung of animals or bird droppings. It can be found around badger setts or forming shrubberies below tall trees used as roosts by starlings, pigeons and other birds. Elder is mainly spread by birds, who scatter its berries and seeds in their droppings.

Elder gets its name from an Anglo Saxon word meaning ‘hollow tree’. The twigs are stout and hold a thick, white pith. This pith is easily hollowed out to make peashooters or whistles. Older stems develop hard, white wood, used by watchmakers to make fine prickers for cleaning mechanical parts. It is also used for carving combs and chessmen.

In June, the elder has showy clusters of creamy-white flowers with a heavy, fruity smell. By September the branches become heavy with bunches of lustrous black juicy fruits. Insipid when raw, they make a distinctively flavoured wine and are also used in pies and jellies.
