Summary[edit]

Description
English: The photograph shows the skeleton of a five-million-volt linear ion accelerator. The acceleration of the ions is achieved thanks to the multiplication of the voltage obtained with a chain circuit, through which electrical charge accumulates in the corona rings highlighted in the image. The photograph was taken inside the acceleration tank, which under normal conditions is filled with an insulating gas to prevent the appearance of discharges, and which requires maintenance to be carried out under special safety conditions. To access the tank it is necessary to go through a narrow hatch and slide under the rings to avoid damaging them. The accelerators are opened on rare occasions and since their assembly, we have had to wait ten years to be able to see the insides of this complex and unique instrument at the service of Science.
