Summary
[edit]DescriptionEbenezer Hunt House aka Maple Row Farm, Clarence, New York - 20201116.jpg |
English: Maple Row Farm, 6879 Salt Road, Clarence, New York, September 2020. Built c. 1824, the architecture here is a vernacular adaptation of the Victorian Folk style that serves as an excellent and (despite subsequent alterations such as the loss of the two-story bay window at the left of the façade and the expansion of the porch to full width) relatively intact exemplification of the rural and agriculturally-oriented built landscape of Clarence in the early 19th century. Original features of the house that do remain are the stone chimney on the north side of the house, the wood clapboard siding, and the unusual oculus window at the peak of the side gable (not visible from this angle). The house's builder and original owner was Ebenezer Hunt (1777-1844), a Vermont-born farmer who moved to Clarence with his wife Margaret and twelve children (they would go on to have one more after their arrival) after purchasing a lot on the Holland Purchase. The rural hamlet that coalesced around their farm took on the name Hunt's Corners. After Ebenezer's death, the house passed into the hands of son Garret (1818-1905), whose business acumen with relation to his farming ventures made him a wealthy man and one of Clarence's most prominent personalities of his era. |
