Summary[edit]

Description

Ebb and Flow

Water sculpture for Newbury Lock

Artist: Peter Randall-Page

Sculptor Peter Randall-Page was commissioned to create the first artwork for the Newbury Town Trail. He was selected to develop designs for an artwork for Newbury Lock, a site of local historical significance, and to respond to the Town Trail’s theme of ‘Flow’.

Ebb and Flow comprises an enormous silver-grey granite bowl, 2.4 metres in diameter and weighing 7 tonnes, set at the centre of a spiral granite path leading down from the lock. The bowl is connected to the lock by underground piping which activates the sculpture by natural water pressure. When the lock fills, water flows into the bowl and then empties away as the level of the lock water goes down.

The granite for the bowl was quarried and turned in Germany and carved by the artist in Devon. Its interior patterning of opposing spirals controls the water as it rises and falls.

Peter describes the idea behind his work: The difference in water levels between the canal and river gives Newbury Lock a great sense of drama and potential energy... I liked the idea of using the dynamic of changing water levels as a way of activating a sculpture’.

An extensive education project ran in parallel to Ebb and Flow involving 300 pupils from six local schools.
