ANATOMICAL RELATIONS OF THORACIC AND ABDOMINAL VISCERA. DISEASES OF THE HEART GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS PERTAINING TO THE ANATOMY, PHYSIOLOGY, AND EXAMINATION OF THE HEART INTRODUCTORY In this chapter are presented certain facts which, because oftheir bearing on the examination and the diseases of the heart,should be well understood. Location of the Heart.—This main organ of circulation is situ-ated in the central and lower part of the thoracic cavity, restingupon the upper convex surface of the diaphragm (see frontis-piece) in such a manner that its long axis forms an angle of sixtydegrees with that of the body (Rosenstein). The base of theorgan is directed upward, backward, and towards the right side,while its apex points downward, forward, and to the left, so asto strike against the chest-wall in the fifth left intercostal spacean inch inside the nipple-line. The larger portion of the heart,therefore, lies to the left of the median line. It is attached at itsbase to the great vesseldiseasesofhearta1907babc
