Summary[edit]

The undulating area, characterized by long mountain ridges and intervening valleys, stretches for hundreds of kilometers. The image section is approximately 50 kilometers wide in the foreground. The characteristic undulating appearance of this landscape was probably created by the compression and pulling apart of the rock masses mobilized by lava flows as they were pushed into the foreland. Over time, this effect was compounded by the erosion of less resistant material between the ridges. Credit: ESA/DLR/FU Berlin (CC BY-SA 3.0 IGO) |
