n the Colonies,in France, and in America. Although he twicerefused a proffered baronetcy for reasons of hisown, he was constrained to accept the covetedhonour of the Order of Merit, conferred upon himby the King in 1902 as the representative of theartists, and his headship thus officially recognizedwas unanimously acclaimed by his professionalbrethren and public alike. He died after a briefillness on July 1, 1904, having attained the age ofeighty-seven, a patriarchal figure, in full commandof his powers and faculties up to the last. Of his generosity, munificence, and wise charitythere is no need here to speak • and the patrioticacts recorded in this article are sufficient testimonyto the passionate love of his country that burnedwithin him. He was a great worker. The industryof Watts was extraordinary. Throughout his lifeit was his practice to rise with the dawn and workthroughout the day, with brief allowance forexercise and meals.
