English: Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, (D) of Hawaii, inspects the joint services honor guard assembled on the Pentagon parade field during the observance of National POW/MIA Recognition Day on Sept. 14, 2004. Inouye, the guest of honor for the ceremony and the featured speaker, was initially barred, because of his Japanese ancestry, from serving in the armed forces during World War II, but later distinguished himself in combat on the Italian peninsula. Losing his right hand to a German grenade and sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, he displayed uncommon valor in leading his troops and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his courage and determination under fire. Escorting Inouye is the Commander of Troops for the ceremony Col. Charles Taylor, U.S. Army. |
