Hugh Molloy, seaman, who was one of the guns crew, saw the sponge fallout on the port and instantly jumped through the opening down on the forecastle,where, exposed to the severe fire of the enemy, he recovered the sponge and spongedand loaded the gun from the outside, while shell and musket-bullets from the sharp-shooters struck the ship all around him. To all on board it looked as if Molloywould never regain the protection of the ship, but, strange as it may seem, he wasnot struck by the rebels, and as soon as he had the gun loaded he crawled throughthe port into the ship again.
