That deposited by the Grand Army of the Republic, Depart-ment of Massachusetts, contained the following memorial, withthe list of articles annexed : — THE GRAND ARMIT OF THE REPUBLIC Is a Fraternal, Loyal, and Charitable Association of honorably dis-charged soldiers and sailors, who aided in resisting the attempt of theslave-holding States of the American Union to secede from that Union ofthe United States of North America, in the great rebellion of the years1861-1865 ; which rebellion, causing a gigantic civil war, then resultedin the emancipation of four millions of slaves, the supremacy of theFederal Government, and the consequent restoration of the Union. The motto of this Association is Fraternity-, Charity, and Loyalty ;and the Association is divided into departments, coinciding territoriallywith States of the Union; and subdivided into smaller local organiza-tions called Posts, devoted to the charitable care of soldiers and theirfamilies, widows, and orphans.
