Atthe left of the Governor, leaning upon his cane, is Mr. C. O.Whitmore. Behind him stands Wendell Phillips, and nearhim, Henry W. Longfellow and Mr. P. B. Cheney. The affecting incidents attendant upon the departure of troopsfor the field are depicted with sympathetic feeling,—the weep-iug wife with her infant in her arms ; the father watching hisson in the ranks with tearful yet proud eyes; the maidenbidding her betrothed farewell,—all these scenes, once socommon, are perpetuated in the tablet. The Avhole number offigures is forty, although the grouping gives an idea of manymore. THE SANITAEY COMMISSION. The bronze relief which symbolizes the works of the SanitaryCommission during the war contains twenty-three figures, themost of them portraits.
