You give your friend a quizzical look, and are aboutto make some remark, when he continues : Today, if you will accompany me, you shall hâvethe privilège of observing a woman at work in her pro-fession, and an opportunity of judging of her ability ascompared with man ; for I hâve been called to a consul-tation with Doctor Smith in a severe case which she nowhas on her hands. At this juncture you observe a very intelligent-lookinglady advancing toward you. She extends her hand tothe doctor, who cordially salutes her and introduces heras Doctor Smith. She is a very bright woman, medium-sized, with dark hair and eyes, is neatly and plainlydressed, and is evidently well educated. As she talks ofher little patient, just around the corner, you are surprisedat her great display of prcfessional enthusiasm, and es-pecially at her manifest interest in the little sufferer. Shesays he is very sick and that she must not let him die.

A lady advancing toward you. The Woman Doctor 113 He has been sick for several days and is now nearingthe crisis, she says, and I must give him back to hisparents if possible. I hâve becôme so much interestedin the child and his parents that I feel that he must besaved if anything I can do will accomplish it. 1 Let us proceed at once. You find yourself already becoming interested, for en-thusiasm and anxiety are contagious, and you really hopefor her sake, and the patients as well, that the child willbe better when you arrive. You enter the sick room,and after a brief inspection she invites the doctor to ex-amine the patient. He does so very carefully ; they thenretire, and after a short consultation return. The doctorinforms the anxious parents that Doctor Smith is doingail that can be done ; that she is managing the case skill-fully, and will, he hopes, be able to save their child ; andthat if it is in the power of human hands to save, thechild will certainly recover.
