Summary[edit]

Description
English: Crannóg construction, Castle Espie. Detail of 1491922, showing the skull of a stag adorning the entrance.

Dating from prehistoric or medieval times, crannógs are artificial islands constructed in lakes or rivers. They were most commonly used as settlements or dwellings - the surrounding water made it difficult for intruders to attack. They were most common in Ireland, particularly parts of Ulster, and also in Scotland.

This Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust centre http://www.wwt.org.uk/gallery/118/visit/castleespie/.html is situated on the site of a Victorian brick and pottery factory on the shores of Strangford Lough. See 8109242 for some related images.
