Cpl. Samuel Thummer (CP 1030), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Corporal Samuel Thummer, Company F, 209th Pennsylvania volunteers, who was wounded by gunshot at the battle of Petersburg, Virginia on April 2nd, 1865. His right arm was amputated on the field, but the wound became infected with gangrene. The patient did eventually recover with deformity. Caption reads: “Sam Thumma Co. F 209 Pa. 20471. Amputation of Arm.” Contributed by R.B. Bontecou, Harewood Hospital, Washington, D.C. History is on reverse: “Samuel Thummer. Gunshot wound of arm. Amputation. Gangrene. Recovery. Samuel Thummer, corp’l, Co. F, 209th Pa. Vols., aged 42, was admitted to Harewood U.S.A. Gen’l Hospital, April 5th, 1865, suffering from gunshot wound of right arm, extent of the injury unknown. Wounded, April 2nd, 1865, at the battle of Petersburgh, Va. Amputation of right arm, double flap April 2nd, 1865, on field; operator unknown. On admission the condition of stump and constitutional state of patient were good.
