Cpl. Charles N. Lapham (SP 154), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Image of Corporal Charles N. Lapham, Co. K, 1st Vermont Calvary, had a successful double amputation of the right thigh and left leg following suffering a wound at the Battle of Boonsboro, Md. Treated by Dr. E. D. Hudson. History on verso: "Surgeon General's Office, Army Medical Museum. Photographs Nos. 154 and 155.--Successful Double Amputation--Right Thigh and Left Leg." On July 8, 1863, Corporal Charles N. Lapham, K, 1st Vermont Cavalry, aged twenty-three, in a skirmish near Boonsborough, Maryland, was struck by a solid shot, which carried away both legs. The shock was, of course, excessive; but he rallied, and forty-eight hours afterwards, he was placed under the influence of chloroform and the right limb, in which the knee-joined was gravely injured, was amputated at mid-thigh, while the left was disarticulated at the knee. Antero-posterior flap operations were done in both instances. He recovered with extraordinary rapidity, inasmuch as on August 25th, six weeks after the reception of the injury, the stumps were firmly cicatrized and he was discharged from service. Eleven months afterwards he was supplied with artificial limbs by Dr. E.D. Hudson. In October, 1864, he wrote from Poughkeepsie Collegiate Institute, where he was studying, that he could walk well on level ground, and ascend and descend a staircase readily; and he contributed the photographs from which these are enlarged. In March, 1874, Mr. Lapham was employed in the Second Auditor's Office, Treasury Department. Photographed at the Army Medical Museum. By order of the Surgeon General: George A. Otis, Assistant Surgeon, U.S.A. Curator, A.M.M."
