Summary[edit]

Description
English:
Congolese Christian family, Congo, ca. 1900-1915
Black and white lantern slide showing a Congolese male Christian convert and his family. The man carries a bible in his hand, possibly meaning that he is a minister or preacher. He wears a shirt, trousers, shoes and carries a white pith helmet. His wife sits in the centre of the picture, and wears a wrap around her head and a smart African style dress. His young son wears long shorts and a shirt. This slide comes from a collection generated by missionaries working for the Congo Balolo Mission, a mission begun in 1889 under the supervision of the East London Training Institute for Home and Foreign Missions that developed into the interdenominational evangelical mission Regions Beyond Missionary Union after 1900.
