f the pistons, the insideof the cylinder heads and the steam ports are polished. This is arefinement which has not been used in locomotive practice in thiscountry, and is done for the reason that a polished surface is knownto absorb much less heat than a rough one. An examination of indicator cards reproduced on Plate VII2taken on the two engines, working at approximately the same cutoffand throttle positions, shows that by virtue of the larger exhaustopening, the release can be delayed very appreciably without increas-ing the back pressure, thus giving a longer expansion line. The de-lay of final exhaust closure, which is permitted by the large reduc-tion of clearance space, allows the back pressure line to be carriedvery near the end of the stroke and adds considerably to the area ofthe card.
