Summary[edit]

Description
English: Common foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) - detail of flower Digitalis is a genus of about 20 species of perennial and biennial plants which are commonly called foxgloves. The best-known species is the common foxglove, Digitalis purpurea, which can be found growing in gardens as well as in the wild. Depending on the species, foxgloves are extremely poisonous, with the leaves growing on the upper stem being particularly potent. The use of Digitalis purpurea extract for the treatment of heart conditions was first described by William Withering in 1785; it is used to control the heart rate and is often prescribed for patients who have been diagnosed with heart failure.
