nhe was twelve years old. Then eighteen years are hidden, as the previoustwelve years were, under a single statement of about a dozen words : AndJesus advanced in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and men,Luke 2 : 52. From Hebrew history and rabbinic literature we know howJewish boys of that period usually spent their time. It is natural, and per-haps right, to infer that Jesus spent his boyhood similar to those of his agein the better class of humble Hebrew homes. He was early taught by bothparents in the law of Moses, as was Timothy, 2 Tim. 3: 15. The rabbinsrequired that a child should begin to learn the law by heart at five years old.At twelve or thirteen years of age he became a son of the law. This isall we know of the childhood and youth of Jesus. Suggestive Applications.—1. The aim of Matthew is to show thatJesus fulfilled prophecy, and hence was the true Messiah. 2.
