Title
Cleveland, 1853
Description
Depicts a bird's-eye view of Cleveland from Ohio City, an independent municipality west of the Cuyahoga River that was annexed to Cleveland in 1854. At the center of the view is Superior Street, the principal commercial street of 19th century Cleveland. A lively commercial district can be seen along the river's edge. Sailing vessels and a side-wheel steamer are docked on the banks of the river. The Ohio and Erie Canal can be seen parallel to the river in the right side of the view. In the foreground is the west bank of the Flats. The Center (Centre) Street bridge, one of two bridges that connected Cleveland and Ohio City in 1853, can be seen in the lower right corner.
