Summary
[edit]DescriptionClarke Hall, east side, Aberford Road - geograph.org.uk - 1210419.jpg |
English: Clarke Hall, east side, Aberford Road A grade II* listed building with dual listing as an ancient monument, this late C17 symmetrical 2 storey, 5 bay house, is built in soft red brick with sandstone quoins, with a low pitched hipped stone flagged roof. The most important feature is a splendid late C17 plaster ceiling in the dining room. A projecting wing (left of picture) was added shortly after the house was built in similar style, and materials, with a shaped gable end.
Extensively restored in the 1970s, the present hall was built by Benjamin Clarke about 1680, although a house has been present on this site since the 13th century. It was built on the site of a previous building known as Bradford Hall. Clarke Hall opened as a childrens educational museum in 1975. |
