| Description |
English: Church Street and St Mary's Looking up Church Street with 257556 and war memorial on the right. St Mary's Church dominates the view. The church was largely destroyed in the Great Fire of Warwick in 1694, partly because some local residents who took refuge in the church brought their already smouldering belongings with them! The rebuilding of the church was directed by Sir William Wilson from Sutton Colefield. Problems arose when columns supporting the half finished tower started to show signs of bulging and cracking because the local stone was not strong enough for the job. The tower was rapidly taken back to the roof level and the still cracked columns continue to support the roof to this day. A new tower, the one seen in the picture, was constructed from harder Shrewley stone on the west end of the church by the same architect. |
