Summary[edit]

Description
English: Redbeds in the Triassic of Wyoming, USA.

Redbeds are hematite-rich siliciclastic sedimentary rocks (shale, siltstone, sandstone, conglomerate). Hematite is iron oxide, Fe2O3. Redbeds become common in the rock record starting at about 1.8 billion years ago, in the late Paleoproterozoic. At that time, atmospheric oxygen (O2) levels were high enough to result in "rusting" of iron at Earth's surface. Redbeds are especially common in nonmarine Permian and Triassic successions.

Stratigraphy: Chugwater Formation, Upper Triassic

Locality: roadcut on the eastern side of Route 28 in Red Canyon, eastern flanks of the far-southeastern Wind River Range, western Wyoming, USA (42° 36' 42.36" North latitude, 108° 36' 26.02" West longitude)
