『鎮西八郎為朝鬼夜叉』源為朝（鎮西八郎）と家来の鬼夜叉（女護島で妻にした女の父親）。為朝は弓の名手だったが、戦に敗れ、伊豆大島に流罪となった。詞書に「源為義の八男。身の丈八尺五寸、大力で強弓を引き、知略にも優れていた。勇ましいことを自慢し、傍若無人であったため、十三才の時、父により筑紫へ追放されたが、九州を統一し姓を鎮西とする。保元の乱では、崇徳院方として活躍したが、戦いに敗れ、近江国で捕らえられた。伊豆大島に流されたが、七島を押領すること十余年。嘉応二年、勅命を受けた狩野介茂光（工藤茂光）に攻められ、為朝は矢を放って抵抗したのち自刃した。享年三十三。あるいは異国に渡ったとも言う」。保元物語では流罪になった為朝は鬼ヶ島から家来を一人連れて帰ったが、ある日茂光らの大軍が船で押し寄せてくるのを見て、最早これまでと悟り自害したとある。
