Summary[edit]

Description

The engine compartment of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid.

While previous gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles were primarily powered by the gasoline engine, with the electric motor used for regenerative braking and engine assist, the Volt goes a step further, uses the electric motor as the primary means of propulsion, and uses gasoline power primarily to recharge the battery (although it can assist the electric motor as well). That way, it overcomes a key limit of pure electric cars - range. If charged at home and used primarily for short to medium commutes, it may not be necessary to refuel a Volt at all.

This car was seen at General Motors' new car showcase at Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction, Costa Mesa, California.
