Description
Français : Exposée au Salon de 1793, la toile de Thévenin recompose une scène épique. Sur fond de canonnades, un petit groupe de patriotes s’empare du gouverneur, M. de Launay, qui «avait perdu la tête avant qu’on la lui coupât» (Rivarol). A cette figure blême, cette silhouette contournée, le peintre oppose la stature herculéenne des jeunes révolutionnaires, la dynamique harmonieuse de leurs attitudes et l’éclat du jaune, du rouge et du bleu primaires de leur costumes. «L’Ancien Régime et la Révolution venaient de se voir face à face et celle-ci laissait l’autre saisie de stupeur» (Michelet).
