Summary[edit]

Description
English: Chance's Glasswork - restoration. It is hard to believe but this location just oozes history. In the background is the elevated seaction of the M5 opened in the early 1970's. Beneath that section of Motorway is the canal built by James Brindley - it follows the contours between Birmingham and Wolverhampton. Just out of sight but immediately in front of the building is the short 'Cut' canal built by Thomas Telford. The photo was taken from the original Birmingham to Wolverhampton railway line built in the late 1830's. As for the building - nothing much really, it's only the place where the glass panels for the Crystal Palace, home of the 1851 Great Exhibition, were made. Just a few minutes along the line, next to Smethwick Galton Bridge station is Galton Bridge (what a surprise). This bridge, built by Thomas Telford, was, at the time of building, the longest single span metal bridge in the world.
