Text Appearing Before Image:
PORTRAIT OF COLONEL CHARLES PETTITCHARLES WILLSON PEALE 98 CHARLES WILLSOX PEALE American, 1741-1S27PORlRAir OF COLONKL CHARLKS Pl-.lTrr Charles \\ illson Peale was a painter with a dctinitc, obviousconception of his sitter and a technical method equally convinc-ing. The portrait of Colonel Pettit is a conscientious represen-tation of the subject. In spite of hardness of line and surface, thetechnique is adequate—this is due more to painstaking carethan to facility with the brush. The drawing is careful, thecomposition good, the colour restrained. The prevailing toneis grey. The coat and waistcoat are a pale olive green and thecurtain is plum colour against a grey background. 99
Text Appearing After Image:
PORTRAIT OF WILLIAM CARPENTERRALPH EARL I GO RALPH EARL American, 1751-1801IORTRArr OF WILLIAM CARPKN Tl.R Ralph Earl was a painter of considerable ablllt). He workedboth In this country and in England. There Is naivete In hisearly work, but later, when he became more sophisticated underthe Influence of the English painters, he lost much of the sim-plicity observable In such pictures as Master Carpenter. ThereIs In the composition a very sincere and primitive note, not aprimitive note suggestive of an elemental age but rather anexpression of a restricted condition of life simply construed. The colour Is effective—particularly the pure red. The book, hat, and table, indeed all the details, are painted with Ingenuous-ness and directness. Oil on canvas, 47H inches by 35 inches. Signed and dated 1779 lOI
