DescriptionCastle of Valongo in the Alentejo Region of Portugal - Apr 2011.jpg | The "Castle of Valongo" is a classic quadrangular fortress that was built around 1250 on the foundations of a much older building. The tall Medieval tower on the corner dates from an older Gothic castle and contains numerous Arabic inscriptions. The castle is now on private property but visitors are welcome to stroll around the outside or (as we did) have a lovely picnic in the shade of the castle walls. The small castle hill affords lovely views over the vineyards and olive orchards that surround it. | ||
