Title
Cast copper alloy circular seal matrix dating to the 13th century
Description
English: Cast copper alloy circular seal matrix dating to the 13th century. It consists of a circular disc with a circular attachment loop set perpendicular to the disc. The back is plain whilst the front has a central motif with the legend around the edge. It has a central motif of a standing eagle with wings outstretched. The legend reads- + S'GERARDIE DE BAILOLIO. This refers to a 'Gerard Balliol'. The Balliol family were a wealthy land-owning family who had a castle in Barnard Castle, County Durham in the Medieval period.

See also LVPL1074, which appears to be the same seal matrix, but reversed.
