Description |
Nederlands: Versiering voor de voorsteven van een prauw. De figuur bestaat uit een ingewkkelde constructie van dierlijke figuren, waaronder een duidelijk herkenbare voorstelling van een hagedis (of krokodil). Verder zijn waarschijnlijk vogels en vissen aangegeven. Behalve als decoratie vervulde dit object zeer waarschijnlijk een beschermende, dwz pech- en kwaadwerende functie (Greub, p. 59 e.v.).
Dit object werd verzameld tijdens de Wichmann Expeditie naar Noord-Nieuw-Guinea in 1903. Een vrijwel identiek opgebouwd exemplaar, ook verzameld tijdens dezelfde expeditie, bevindt zich in de collectie van het Wereldmuseum in Rotterdam. Deze voorstevenversiering is afkomstig van het dorp Tobati aan de Yotefa Baai (Greub, afb. op p. 62). Het is zeer waarschijnlijk dat de prauwversieringen van de dezelde houtsnijder zijn. Het TM-exemplaar toont intensievere gebruikssporen dan dat in het Wereldmuseum.
