English: An entry of the Ombilin coal mines
Nederlands: foto. Op diverse plaatsen in de Archipel werd steenkool gevonden en met de groei van de stoomvaart, de spoorwegen en het gebruik van allerlei soorten stoommachines in fabrieken werd het winnen van steenkool steeds belangrijker. Aanvankelijk, vanaf ca. 1850, vond de steenkoolwinning vooral op Borneo plaats. In 1867 werd er een mijningenieur naar de Padangse Bovenlanden gestuurd om na te gaan of daar kolen in exploiteerbare hoeveelheden voorkwamen. Dit leidde in 1868 tot de ontdekking van de dikke steenkolenlagen van het Ombilin-kolenveld of Ombilin-kolenbekken. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Een ingang van de Ombilin steenkoolmijnen bij Sawahloento |
