Nederlands: Repronegatief. Het water van Batavia is altijd zowel een vloek als een zegen geweest. Het was een vloek omdat de grachten, net als in Nederland, lange tijd als vuilnisvat dienden, zodat ze vooral in de droge tijd vreselijk stonken. Tijdens de natte moesson werd het vuil tamelijk snel naar zee afgevoerd. Dat de armere lagen van de Javaanse bevolking zich en hun kleren ook in dit water wasten was uiteraard ook zeer ongezond. Het water was een zegen omdat transport over water lange tijd sneller was dan transport over land. Op de foto wordt er water geput om de stoffige wegen te besproeien om aldus het stof vast te leggen.
