Nederlands: Vermoedelijk een fetisjmandje voor het conserveren van het hoofd van een man waaraan beschermende krachten worden toegeschreven.
De Yoruba is het meest urbane Afrikaanse volk. Al vanaf de 11e eeuw was hun eerste stad, Ile-Ife, het centrum van een invloedrijke stadstaat, en gauw volgden andere stadstaten met bruisende centra. Deze ontwikkeling heeft zich tot de dag van vandaag voortgezet. De Yoruba cultuur heeft nauwe raakvlakken met die van de Fon in zuidelijk Benin en Togo. Hun politieke systemen en religieuze werelden zijn vrijwel identiek, en ook de kunsten van beide groepen tonen wederzijdse beïnvloeding. Veel van de objecten worden gebruikt in de religie en voor het onderschrijven van de leiderschapssystemen van het koninklijke hof en van de ouderengenootschappen, de Ogboni. Deze genootschappen, met zowel mannelijke als vrouwelijke leden, regeren samen met de koning. Ogboni moet machtsmisbruik door de koning voorkomen, fungeren als rechtbank en spelen een hoofdrol bij het kiezen, inaugureren maar ook begraven van koningen. |
