CHRISTMAS CARDS HISTORY. It was in 1843, during the VICTORIAN period, when JOHN CALCOTT HORSLEY a British artist who lived in Italy, INTRODUCED THE FIRST CHRISTMAS CARD. John, was hired by Sir Henry Cole, who wanted to encourage people to help those in need. John Calcott went to England and drew a portrayed of a happy family which included a boy sipping wine in the center and the side panels showed the spirit of Christmas ‘CHARITY’ feeding the hungry and clothing the naked. , with the words ‘A MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU’ on the front of the Christmas Card. Despite the criticism as it was not socially correct for a boy to drink wine, this FIRST CHRISTMAS CARD was a great hit, so great, that the manufactures could not keep up with the demand. The FIRST religious-themed cards, with baby Jesus in a manger, Mary and Joseph as the main subject and with the words ‘A MERRY CHRISTMAS’ on the front were created by CHARLES GOODALL in the year 1862.
