Summary[edit]

Description
English: Butcher's Broom, Vernditch This 2ft high evergreen shrub bears tiny green-white flowers from January to April and red berries from October to May. Both appear to come from the centre of the spiny leaves. These 'leaves' are really flattened branches, the true leaves being reduced to small scales. Butcher's broom grows in dry woods in southern England and Wales. At one time it was made into brooms by butchers who found the prickly leaves ideal for cleaning chopping blocks.
