Title
Building a playground in one day at Memorial Park, Port Pirie, 1918
Description
Port Pirie lost 234 men who had volunteered to serve in the First World War. In 1917 it was decided that a memorial park should be built in the town to commemorate those who had fallen. Broken Hill Associated Smelters, for whom many of the volunteers had worked, arranged plants and seedlings from the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne. In 1918, the park was augmented with the construction of a children's playground, built in just one day (18 August). "Port Pirie, the Friendly City" by K. Bullock, pages 93–94.
