llthis, there was found the practice of using holy water, ofsinging service in alternation, of praying for the dead, andof perfect similarity in the costumes of the great and superiorlamas to those of the different orders of the Romish hierarchy.These early missionaries further were led to conclude fromwhat they saw and heard that the ancient books of the lamascontained traces of the Christian religion which must, theythought, have been preached in Tibet in the time of theapostles. 1 The Abbe Prouv^ze, in his biography of the Frenchmissionary, Gabriel Durand, says that the points of similaritybetween Tibetan Buddhism and Christianity are far toominute to do away with the ideas of plagiarism. Thegovernment of Tibet is borrowed from the ecclesiasticalgovernment of the States of the Church. ^ The Delai lamais like the pope, and his election very similar. St. Hyacinth of Polandand St. Oderic of Frioul, who visited Tibet in the fourteenthcentury, may have effected this propagandism.^ The cross,pursues the Abbe, alluding perhaps to the Buddhist Swastika, has remained enshrined amongst the arid rocks of Tibet asa sign of salvation.^ But greater proofs of Christian pro-pagandism are in reserve. The Abbe points out that theChinese know all about the Virgin Mother. A missionaryof Kiang Si reports that he has seen statues of her holdingan infant child in her arms, and treading down the serpentwith her feet. By this statue stood a solemn man surroundedby ten smaller statues. These, he thinks, were St. Josephand the shepherds, though I fear that they were the disciplesand Buddha.
