Crescents Now Lead In Amateur Hockey. Champions Defeat St. Nicholas Team, Which Requires Extra Period of Play. The Crescent Athletic Club team, champions of the Amateur Hockey League, worked their way into the leading position last night in the continuation of the series for this season's title when they defeated the team of the St. Nicholas S.C. by 4 goals to 3 in one of the best matches seen in the rink this year.

An extra period -Jras necessary because of the tie which existed at the end of the halves of twenty minutes each, at which stage the score was 3 goals all. The end came when Srurreff. on an angle shot from a scrimmage, tallied the winning goal after 12 minutes and 21 seconds of play in the extra period. From the outset the wing play of the Crescents was lacking, while, on the other hand, the team work of the St. Ntck team wag outstanding and at times brilliant.

Lack of proper direction, however in the matter of shooting for goals worked navoc wrtn tnelr aspirations at winning, and Eltho-gh they displayed the better combination, the result snowed that victory was not for them. The defeated team showed a lack of aggressiveness and the forwards failed to get into the game as the Crescents did when they were In tight places. The New Mooners were on the Job when it came to loafing offside and took advantage of every little bit of sharp practice wnich was likely to be overlooked by the officials. In the second period there was much slashing and tripping, with each side suffering penalties tor infraction of the rtilys in this department. There 'wasn't an Idle moment in the fifty-two minutes and a few seconds that the game required in actual play, and the rooters for each Bide had time pretty well taken up, urging their favorites on with the result that every one was on his feet throughout yelling like mad Xor a victory.

The game seesawed In the matter of the domination of tile rubber for nearly a third of the opening period before a count was tallied, this coming when Peabody, for the St. Nick team, sneaked the puck through after Mills had left his cage in order to chack Stanley, who had made a beautiful carry half the length of the rink. Stanley had accepted the rubber from Chew on a rebound shot, which went wide and was brought back only to be carried by rather clever team work. The score was evened tip when Kennedy, on a pass from Richards, which, of course, was unintentional, tallied for Crescent on a rather easy shot in 13:40. This count had been prefaced by some wonderful hockey In which the rubber was coursed up and down the rink with both teams in hot pursuit most of tbe time.

Relnmund from Shirreff was the call of the markers when the third goal was annexed for Crescent at 16:0. The occasion for this was a great rally on the part of the New Mooners who raced up and down the ice and apparently grasped a victory by the score. Try as they would the Santa Claus seven could not get by Mills with a count, and the half ended 2 to 1 In favor of the champions. Onnintr the second period. St.

Nicks Immediately bottled their opponents back of their case, with the rubber betnjr shot out in order that Peabody and Turrell might essay soma shoots which proved unproductive. The play became fast and Richards was penaliied for tripping Kennedy, which was followed bv Shirreff getting the side lines for slashing Loutrel. Then Vwrrel! whs sent off the Ice two minutes for slashing, with a similar penalty falling to the lot of Scarborough fcr a like practice. It became noticeable that the champions were loafing offside, and through such tactics Kennedy scored, but the tally was disallowed. The St.

Nicks were doing great team work, but their efforts were tinavlling of a score until Turrell made a fine carry half the rink's length and tied the score at all. The puck had barely been faced when Kennedy tallied on a mixup play ten seconds afterward. Their was shortlived, however, as Peabody picked the puck from a face-off six seconds later and poked it through to the chagrin of. Mills. This left the score three all and there was nothing more done In the scoring line until Shirreff made his winning gc.ai half way thorough the extra period.
