Title
Brooch
Description
English: Copper alloy trumpet brooch with a large oval head, now somewhat battered at the edge. This is surmounted by a cross bar for a solid chain loop, which does not itself survive. The axial bar of the spring is held by a lug at either end and is probably iron, to judge by the presence of iron corrosion around the spring. Bow decorated by a large, prominent button, fairly crudely moulded with a double rib above and below. Lower part of the bow is plain apart from a narrow groove along each edge. The foot knob is of disc form with a circular ridge decorating its base. The catch plate extends as far up as the button. Traces of tinning/silvering survive. Length 73mm. Cf. Hattatt (1987) no.959. The distribution of this type of trumpet brooch is centred either side of the lower Severn.
