Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Mary Wilson painted the triptych for the children’s altar in the old parish house (the original Christ Church). The triptych, which includes many landmarks of the Village of BronxviLle, intrigued the children and served as a teaching aid.

In the center panel, which is subdivided into three sections, the Blessed Virgin with the Christ Child is watched over by a guardian angel while children offer gifts. In the left section, Jesus is shown as a young boy working in his father’s carpenter’s shop and in the right section he is playing in a field. A butterfly—symbolizing the Resurrection—has alighted on his hand. The little Scottie, Angus, belonged to the Rev. Harold F. Hohly, the fourth rector of Christ Church.

Bronxville scenes form the background of the center panel. The Bronx River, the Bronxville School, Alger Court, the Hotel Gramatan and the original Village Hall (the latter two now torn down) are all clearly recognizable.

The saints depicted on the side panels are “pendant” saints, which means they belong together. They were chosen because their interesting stories held special appeal for children.
