Summary[edit]

Description
English: British Telecom repeater station, off Old Blandford Road, Salisbury. Built in 1939, this is quite a substantial building but has the appearance of being rather dilapidated. Repeater stations performed the function of amplifying analogue signals on long distance telephone lines to compensate for losses incurred in transmission. A repeater station would be required every 30 Km or so. They also performed the function of multiplexing a large number of individual telephone conversations onto a single twisted pair or coaxial line. With the advent of digital and fibre optic technology the need for large repeater stations has been greatly reduced although, even with fibre optics, there is still a need to regenerate the digital signal at intervals along the way. As can be seen, this station is still in use.
