| Description |
Nederlands: Brandijzers werden gebruikt om misdadigers te straffen. Een gloeiendheet brandijzer werd op het lichaam van een veroordeelde, meestal het gelaat, geplaatst om zo een brandmerk achter te laten. Door het brandmerken was een misdadiger dus blijvend als zodanig te herkennen. Een letterlijk stigmatiserende straf dus, die ook een afschrikwekkende functie had als ‘spiegel ende exempel van allen anderen’. De straf werd in de 14de eeuw vooral toegepast in gevallen van bedrog en vervalsing, later ook voor diefstal, landloperij en prostitutie. Pas in 1854 is het brandmerken in Nederland officieel afgeschaft.
Iedere stad had zijn eigen brandmerk, meestal het stadswapen of de eerste letter van de naam van de stad. Dit exemplaar toont de Gelderse leeuw uit het wapen van Venlo. In de collectie van de Gevangenpoort bevinden zich 40 van dit soort brandijzers, afkomstig uit verschillende Nederlandse steden en daterend van de tweede helft 17de eeuw tot het midden van de 19de eeuw.
