English: The Infantes Fernando and Gabriel Italiano: Ritratto degli Infanti di Carlo di Borbone.
Il ritratto fa parte di una serie di tre dipinti raffiguranti a coppia i sei infanti di Carlo di Borbone e Maria Amalia di Sassonia. La serie, erroneamente assegnata in passato alla Scuola di Mengs, è stata attribuita alla produzione matura del Bonito, date le molte affinità stilistiche con l'analoga serie madrilena dipinta dall'artista. La differente età dei bambini (Ferdinando, 1751 - 1825, e Gabriele, 1752 - 1788), permette di identificare la datazione del ritratto intorno al 1759, ossia poco prima della partenza di Carlo per la Spagna (6 ottobre 1759). Giuseppe Bonito, formatosi presso il Solimena, tese a personalizzare il linguaggio del maestro tentando più sonori accordi barocchi di temperie neoseicentesca e puntando, soprattutto nella pittura di genere, ad una rappresentazione teatralizzata della scena, in aderenza ai dettami propugnati dal maestro. Contemporaneamente alla produzione sacra, si distinse oltre che nella pittura di genere, soprattutto quale ritrattista. Nel 1751 fu nominato da Carlo "pittore di camera di S. R. Maestà", carica di grande prestigio che lo colloca tra la cerchia degli artisti più rappresentativi della corte borbonica. In questo, come in altri ritratti, il Bonito tralasciando l'iconografia aulica della ritrattistica ufficiale, individualizza i personaggi raffigurati, imprimendo ad essi una capacità comunicativa derivante dallo sguardo intensamente volto allo spettatore in un muto colloquio. |
